On the artistic side of the equation, I really enjoy the composition of this piece. It reminds me of some of the ways that Degas cropped his horse racing paintings in the early days of Impressionism.
For cycling, this is when the riders go through the designated "Feed Zone" where their soigneurs pass them musettes filled with bidons, energy bars/gels and a tastey treat to keep them fueled and happy. Paul Sherwen (former racer and current commentator for NBC Sports Network - among others) opined that given where they were racing, the treat must be a lovely French pastry. The racers need to consume around five or six thousands calories on race day just to stay even with what they will burn out on course, so the feed zones are of the utmost importance.
