The former world champion of the time trial (and this year's Bronze Medal) had gotten off the front on the last of the big climbs of the day She now was using her skill against the clock to pull a few seconds at a time out of the rather strong group chasing behind. That group was doing the same against the rest of the peloton. At this point she has been off the front for roughly fifty kilometers with another fifty-five to go. It is (in this case) literally a long way to go.
