As the German men approached the first time check they were just a half second off the pace of the Brits. The trio was led by Jasha Sutterlin followed in turn by Nils Polit and Tony Martin. Martin is a four time World Champion in the Individual Time Trial, but is suffering from the lingering effects of a serious crash in this year's Vuelta d'Espania. When I got to watch him race in the Worlds here in Richmond, Virginia, he was still recovering from a bad crash tin the Tour de France. In both cases, he was able to contribute to the German team before having to drop off the pace.
