Catching His Two Minute Man
The course for every race finishes with a steep climb up Governor's Street that runs right behind the State Capital building (designed by Thomas Jefferson) and the Governor's Mansion. It is a leg sapping assault that leads to the false flat approach to the line. It is extremely rare to see three riders at once in an individual time trial since riders start in two minute intervals. Here, Jan Karlsson of Sweden is catching the Korean, Kyeongho Min, who had started out two minutes ahead of the Swede. Mixed into that duo is the Spaniard, Xavier San Sebastien, who is on his first lap of the course. It may well have help San Sebastien to have the two finishers to chase for a kilometer or two before the line. In a time trial, riders are not allowed to draft off of one another but must shift to the other side of the road as they pass each other. Since this moment happened on a steep climb, I am quite sure that the race marshals turned a blind eye.
