The trio of Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious), Rui Costa (Intermache-Circus-Wanty) and Lennard Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) had managed to lose the rest of the break away to fight out the stage victory together. Each were watching the other, as they went under the flame rouge. Costa was personifying the adage that you have to be willing to lose in order to win. He waited and waited until someone else started the sprint (Buitrago) and the chasers were just about back on their wheels. Yet, his patience paid off with him claiming his first stage victory in the Vuelta for the former World Champion.
