Hard Corners/Technical Descent
The swtichbacks on the descents can be very difficult and almost as exhausting as the climbs. The riders hit speeds of 70 kph on the straights and then have to brake hard to get slowed down enough to make the 180 degree turns only to sprint away from the corner to get up to maximum speed. This is done over and over until the bottom of the mountain. Descending is a skill that requires nerves of steel and a little thrill seeking. This is the group containing the main contenders with the exception of Ryder Hesjedal, who ended the stage losing significant time on his rivals. The second rider visible in line in Cadel Evans, who was isolated without any team mates, yet rode well to defend his position in the GC (overall rankings).
