One of the most beautiful streets in Richmond is Monument Avenue, lined with trees and beautiful Antebellum mansions along the wide sidewalks and grand statues of the generals of the Confederacy. It is some times called the Avenue of Second Place Trophies. The road race went up past the Lee Monument swung around the Jefferson Davis Statue and came back down before swinging of the avenue at the Stuart Monument on their way back downtown. The avenue is another of the cobbled boulevards the riders faced, but this pave is more like the Champs Elysees than the pave of Paris Roubaix. This group is off the front of the peloton trying to chase down the four or five riders making up the two leading breakaways.
